Hong Kong is a vibrant, fast-paced city packed with millions of people, but its dense population has led to severe housing issues, especially for those in lower-income brackets. For many struggling citizens, the cost of living is so high that they are forced to reside in tiny, subdivided apartments or even metal cage-like enclosures known as “cage homes.” These cramped spaces, sometimes stacked in rows within a single room, offer little more than a bed-sized area to sleep and store belongings. Hong Kong citizens are living in cages not out of choice, but out of necessity, as affordable housing becomes increasingly scarce. While the city shines on the surface with its towering skyscrapers and luxury shopping, the reality for thousands is a daily struggle for space, privacy, and dignity.
