In the dense habitats of the Andaman Islands and the Nicobar Islands, the maned pigeon, also known as the Nicobar pigeon, stands out as an unusual bird with distinct habits. Measuring around 40 centimeters in length, it spends much of its time walking across the forest floor instead of flying like most pigeons. This species prefers a calm, ground based routine while searching for food. Still, when danger approaches, it can quickly take to the air and perch on nearby branches to stay out of reach. Its behavior reflects how isolated island environments can influence wildlife in unexpected ways.
