Abandoned Vorkuta Buildings Buried Under Ice (20 photos)

Photographer Maria Passer documented the eerie remains of Vorkuta, a remote Russian city where brutal winters can send temperatures plunging to minus 58 degrees Fahrenheit (-50 Celsius). As more people abandon the settlement, once-familiar spaces are slowly being swallowed by the unforgiving Arctic climate. Empty apartments, deserted offices, and forgotten bedrooms now sit beneath thick layers of snow and ice, transforming ordinary interiors into frozen landscapes. What were once warm, lived-in rooms have become silent reminders of a fading community, with frost creeping across walls, furniture, and windows. The result is a haunting collection of images that captures what happens when people leave and nature gradually takes over.
