Beneath the bustling streets and gleaming skyscrapers of the China‘s capital, a hidden parallel world exists, one void of sunlight yet pulsing with life. It is estimated that more than a million Chinese live in underground bunkers, repurposed into modest homes due to the skyrocketing real estate prices above ground. These subterranean dwellers, often referred to as the “Rat Tribe,” navigate a labyrinth of narrow corridors and windowless rooms to carve out a future in the city. Despite the cramped conditions, this underground network remains a vital, though invisible, pillar of the urban economy.
