Kai Tak Airport in Hong Kong occupies a distinctive position in aviation history. Situated in the city’s central area, it necessitated large wide-body aircraft to execute a challenging and steep approach for landing. Shut down in 1998 to pave the way for a spacious and aviation-friendly airport, Kai Tak gained renown for its exceptionally challenging approach. Positioned in the heart of Kowloon Bay, the runway required pilots to execute sharp maneuvers just above the densely populated Hong Kong city’s rooftops, followed by rapid braking to prevent landing in the water.
