Mushrooms might as well be from another planet. They don’t really seem to fit here. They aren’t animals or plants—they belong in a category all their own. Growing in dark, damp places, they have an otherworldly, almost alien presence that can be incredibly striking.
“The Last of Us,” a popular show where fungi turn people into zombies, tapped into the strange and unsettling side of mushrooms. While that’s science fiction, real-life mushrooms can be just as eerie, if not more so.
Here are some mushrooms that look like they crawled straight out of hell. Some bleed, some smoke, and others resemble the twisted hands of a ghost. They’re weird, strangely beautiful, and definitely unsettling.
